Some Things About Me

After moving to Canada at age three, I learned English thanks to my imaginary friends from Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and Electric Company.

My lifelong fascination with words and books eventually led to an internship at Ms. Magazine, stints as a fact-checker and reporter, a long career as a freelance magazine writer, a leadership role at Lifetime Television, and an 11-year stint at Apple Books, where I led Editorial Content & Strategy.

I love working with aspiring writers and authors from different walks of life to craft proposals, outlines, and manuscripts that do justice to their passion, vision, and singular voice. A lifelong learner and traveler, I am currently studying Spanish and color theory, and I have assisted yoga retreats in Peru and India. I am working on my first novel, about a Bauhaus-trained artist whose life diverges dramatically from what she had imagined.

Praise

  • A Masterclass in Good Editing

“Hagar Scher is the kind of editor every writer dreams of finding: empathetic, tireless, and possessed of an uncanny gift for making ideas sing while keeping the soul of what was meant to be said. She knows what to cut and what to protect, and she does both with grace. Working with her is a masterclass in what good editing actually is: not the imposition of someone else's vision, but the careful, humble work of helping a writer become more fully themselves on the page.”

Christine Renaud, CEO of Braindate and author of the forthcoming Business Witch

  • Showing Up With Integrity

"Working with Hagar was a great pleasure. She was kind, diligent, collaborative, and genuinely curious. What I appreciated most about working together was her respect for the work, for the process, and for the responsibility that came with helping to tell my story. In a project rooted in culture and lived experience, Hagar showed up with integrity and care, even traveling to Apache land to better understand my culture and the stories that color my book."

  • Professionalism and Passion

“I've had the pleasure of working with Hagar on a number of book projects. She has that rare and delightful combination of a wonderful way with words and with people. These skills, along with her professionalism and passion, level-up the quality and impact of any project she works on.”
